THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
We have learned about our body's need for proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates. We also know that we need to get these nutrients from food. Now, we will learn how the food is broken down into these essential nutrients, and how they are transported to every cell in our body to make ATP (energy) as well as other cell processes. We will take a journey of our food through the digestive tract (which is about 9 meters in length) from our mouth to our anus. We will explore how both mechanical and chemical digestion breaks down the food, and how we absorb nutrients and water and then dispose of the leftover material in the toilet!
