MOVEMENT THROUGH THE MEMBRANE
During our unit on cells, we learned the importance of moving materials in and out of the cell through the cell membrane. In this unit, we will learn all about how those materials move through this selective membrane. Have you ever followed to wonderful smell to the kitchen, to find brownies baking? This is an example of diffusion. Diffusion is the movement of particles from high to low concentration. Diffusion is the method our body uses to get oxygen into our cells, and carbon dioxide out. Osmosis is the diffusion of water molecules through a cell membrane. When we don't drink enough water, our cells dehydrate and water leaves the cell through osmosis. Our body maintains homeostasis by making us feel thirsty. We drink water, and again, through osmosis, water enters the cell. When particles and water move from high to low concentration, they don't require energy (ATP). However, some particles move from low to high concentration like salmon swimming against the current upstream. This requires energy.

Click on this link to review passive transport (diffusion and osmosis) and active transport. Note: Facilitated diffusion is the same thing as an open protein doorway. Also, please don't beyond the definition of active transport. There is more information that you do not need to know.
